Considering Curtailment in 110 kV Grid Planning to Mitigate Uncertainties in the Integration of Renewables

Feed-in curtailment in critical situations for the grid is one option to reduce grid expansion needs in systems with a high increase of distributed renewable energy sources (DRES). The consideration of curtailment at the planning stage furthermore offers an opportunity to handle uncertainties regarding location and capacity of DRES. This paper presents a method to assess the impact of curtailment on 110 kV grid expansion objected to regional uncertainties. Using a Monte Carlo approach, critical branches, the expected curtailed energy and the possible reduction of required grid expansion measures are determined. The results show a notable impact of regional uncertainty of DRES increase on the expected curtailed energy. Using this information, expansion measures can be assessed and optimized regarding the aforementioned uncertainties.
