Modern Techniques in The Modelling of High Voltage Power Systems

All components of the high voltage power systems (such as overhead power lines and substations) must meet power requirements and ensure large distance transmission and distribution of electrical energy to the end user. With the continuous demand of energy worldwide and the need to extend the power grid, new techniques are required to be developed in order to build or upgrade overhead power lines and substations efficiently, accurately and at lower costs. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of two modern design techniques in the modelling of high voltage power systems: PLS-CADD/TOWER and Revit; for technical parameters, environmental features and visualization tools. The PLS-CADD/TOWER software is used in the modelling and analysis of overhead power lines. Revit is used in the modelling of substations. In addition, both components can be integrated in a BIM (Building Information Modelling) environment. With the help of these tools all the information required for a project can be merged and used as design framework adaptable between projects.
