Investigation of Rotor Structure Influence on the Windage Loss and Efficiency of FSPM Machine

This paper focuses on the influence on the windage loss brought by different rotor structures of flux-switching permanent magnet machines. Ribs and shrouds are added to the salient pole rotor to reduce the windage loss. The baseline machine has a dual-stator/rotor structure, which introduces complications in evaluating the windage loss with empirical methods. Computational fluid dynamics tool and finite element analysis are used to evaluate the fluid characteristics and the electromagnetic performance of the machine with different types of rotors, respectively. The results show that the rotor with shrouds is the most effective structure to reduce windage loss without compromising torque production.
