Towards Solving the IoT Standards Gap

Internet of Things (IoT) has received enormous attention over the last 5 years. In the near future, IoT will become a network of billions of smart devices, sensors, vehicles, home appliances that appear in the everyday life of a user collecting & sharing data to make their life easier. In the year 2011, the number of Internet connected devices surpassed “human population” on earth & is expected to cross 50 billion devices globally by 2020. With this explosion in the number of devices, control points & amount of data, connecting these devices to each other & securing the data becomes a big challenge. There is a need for end-to-end standardization of IoT device resource models, connectivity protocols & architecture to meet the needs of IoT applications. A lot of different consortiums are working in this direction by developing IoT standards driven primarily by industry giants & government bodies. In this paper, we discuss the various standardization efforts happening across the globe & also look at India specific standards. We also present our perspective on the consolidation of these different IoT standards through collaboration & liaisons to unlock greater revenue potential through IoT.
