Efficient Optimization of Wake Up Delay and Power Saving of Adjustable DRX Mechanism in LTE Network

In Long Term Evolution (LTE) higher data rates have been achieved by using higher order modulation techniques such as 64-QAM., MIMO techniques and so on that require computationally complex circuits. And these circuits drain more battery of User Equipment (UE). The Discontinuous Reception (DRX) mechanism., which is used in LTE to reduce power consumption in the mobile phones battery resources., results in higher wake up delay (latency) due to its sleep period. In this paper, we present the improvement in analytical model of DRX mechanism proposed in [1]. We have considered the percentage of time that UE spends in sleep state and wake-up (buffer) delay as two main parameters. Result concludes that by choosing Improved adjustable DRX mechanism, the trade-off between the additional buffered delay and power consumption can be balanced when choosing α = 2 and β = 2. The wake-up delay decreases by approximately 67.78% for the case of DRX short sleep period equals to 319.2ms by choosing α = 2 and β = 2.5, comparing to Adjustable DRX mechanism presented in paper [1]. The short sleep period can be changed appropriately based on the running applications at the UE. From the analytical results, we can see that choosing larger value of α or β is more preferable for application that consumes lots of battery resource. For delay-sensitive applications., the small value of α or β is more suitable.
