Geometrical Optimization of Hall Effect Sensors for Use in Energy and Power Meters

This paper presents a geometrical optimization of Hall effect sensors to be used in energy and power meters. To this purpose three geometries are proposed, namely the cross-like (45 deg and XL) and square Hall cells. These structures offer a low offset and offset temperature drift, as well as having an improved sensitivity, via geometrical correction factor maximization. To assess the performance of these cells, three-dimensional physical models have been proposed. Simulation results for the power-related sensitivity and dissipated power are also included. Experimental results on the sensitivity, room temperature residual offset and offset temperature drift are provided.
