Statistical Modeling of Effluent Generated from the proposed Rampal power plant for the assessment of Environmental Impact

In this paper, we have carried out an environmental impact assessment due to the flow of effluents on the Sundarbans, one of nature's vast mangrove forests in the Khulna division of Bangladesh. As part of our investigations we have collected wind data from the meteorological department for the proposed plant location (Rampal), we have used this data to model the flow of effluents (mainly SO2 & NOx) in the direction of the Sundarbans. We have plotted rose diagrams for each year using the raw data obtained from the meteorological department. We have considered three different scenarios for each year (i.e. maximum, minimum & average wind speeds) using Gaussian plume model for our statistical modeling. Graphs of concentration vs. distance have been plotted for each case to determine the maximum possible concentration of the effluent on the Sundarbans and the possible detrimental environmental effect has been evaluated using various international and national health and safety standards.
