Intelligent decentralized approach for reactive power compensation by VSC converter

In order to secure the stability of the energy system, taking into account an increase of renewable energy sources, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems can be used to transport energy over long distances from generation centers to load centers. Thereby, HVDC-VSC converters can provide a decentralized contribution to voltage stability. The application of modern information transfer according to IEC 61850 from the control center to an intelligent substation enables the implementation of a decentralized intelligent algorithm. To test these algorithms, demonstrators and models need to be developed and tested. In this paper, the connection of an HVDC converter by IEC 61850 is developed and tested by an approach for voltage stability through VSC converters. Furthermore, the control of the inverter and a protocol adapter is realized by an RTU.
