ETEL Smart Distribution Transformer for Electric Vehicle Applications

This paper describes the initiatives undertaken by ETEL Ltd, Auckland, New Zealand to develop a smart distribution transformer for electric vehicle (EV) applications. This includes ETELs patented temperature, moisture and hydrogen sensors based on fibre optics. The smart transformer gives accurate information on the transformer life used depending on the number of EVs connected. This transformer avoids failure due to EV loading as it enhances LV network visibility. The transformer is also equipped with an on-load tap changer (OLTC) providing voltage regulation.
