The ProtoDUNE Single-Phase Detector

The DUNE experiment will measure neutrino oscillation asymmetries with a 1300 km baseline to determine if CP violation exists in the leptonic sector. The experiment consists of a megawatt neutrino beam and near detector at FNAL and four liquid-argon (LAr) far detector modules at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota. DUNE data taking will begin in 2024 when the first detector module turns on and starts the non-beam based measurement program looking for proton decay, core collapse supernova and studying atmospheric neutrinos. (The neutrino beam program will begin in 2026 when the beam is commissioned.) The DUNE far detector modules each have a total (fiducial) mass of 17(10) kt, which will be a factor of 50 increase in size over each of the ICARUS T300 sub-modules. The large increase in size combined with the limitations imposed by the mile deep Ross Shaft at SURF required major changes to the previous detector designs. Given the large scaling factor and the changes in design an extensive prototyping program is important for DUNE's success.
