Mitigation of Low Frequency Oscillations in Two Area System Using STATCOM with PODC

Inter-area oscillations occurs mainly due to interactions between synchronous generators. These oscillations cause restraining of power transmission in transmission line. To investigate the performance of practical power system allied with wind farms, a two-area power system with an integrated Dynamic Slip Induction Generator (DSIG)-based onshore and Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-based offshore Wind Farm is studied. This paper investigates the improvement of power oscillation damping of a two area system with integrated wind farms. The main contribution of this paper is to design a Power Oscillation Damping Controller (PODC) connected to AC voltage controller of STATCOM to damp out oscillations in the two-area study system. Identifying the location of STATCOM is also considered in this paper. STATOM is located at the weakest bus which is identified by plotting P-V curves. This approach also helps in improving the loadability of the system. The studies made in this paper are performed using power system analysis toolbox (PSAT), which is a powerful toolbox in MATLAB for power system analysis and MATLAB/SIMULINK model for time domain simulations.
