Dynamics of Land Surface Temperature with Changing Land-Use: Building a Climate ResilientSmart City

Urbanization is an irrevocable process resulting in increase in impervious layer due to result of migration of people or the consolidation of peri-urban areas into the cities causing transformation of lung spaces into paved spaces. Ever since the industrial revolution and introduction of IT sector into Indian economy, the urban population has increased from 30% to 54

since 1950. People in search of better job opportunities, education, infrastructure and improved living standards tend to relocate themselves near the cityleads to increased urbanization. This is one of the major drivers in landscape dynamics which includes alteration in land use pattern within and in theperiphery of the city resulting in elevated temperature in urban areas and formation of urban heat island. Continuous increment in surface temperature is one of the major contributors of climatic changes across the globe. Land surface temperature (LST) of the earth is changingat a disquieting rate, causing fluctuation in seasonal and rainfall patternsaffecting the ecology of the region damaging the biodiversity, changing in crop patterns, etc. Various studies indicated a strong relation of changes in LST with the modification in land use patterns inferring that increased urbanization and mismanagement of land and resources is the root cause of global and local climate change. These modifications in land use and LST can be tracked using space borne sensors, thus, providing vital information about the specific pockets with highest changes. Kolkata is facing unprecedented urbanization and increased temperature fluctuations because of the development activities oriented towards economic growth of the city. In this study, Land use patterns were derived for last three decades and Land surface temperature was quantified. Results specifydensified urban growth within the city boundaries and increasing land surface temperature Results helped in understanding the responsible factors of change and will provide an insight about the regions, which has experienced the major changes. This will helping the decision makers to create and implement sustainable development policies.
