Assessment and Standardization of Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicle technology presents a huge challenge to standardization and legal bodies. This is a new, rapidly emerging domain, which has created a complete industry within a mere decade. The objective assessment and quantification of self-driving algorithms and system for safety is now in the focus of numerous Standard Development Organizations, but as of today, only limited aspects of the safety domain are covered. This paper overviews the most recent trends and current international efforts to support the autonomous vehicle developers and manufacturers with an assessment and standard framework. The focus is especially put on the validation of higher level of autonomy self-driving capabilities.
