Modeling and Performance Analysis of Variable Speed Wind Turbines

In the large countries, the distance between the communities is so far and the full-scale power grid system is almost difficult to realize. In order to increase the generation capacity and to decrease the fossil fuel consumptions, the renewable energy sources such as wind energy are utilized instead of conventional power generations because these clean energies do not require any supply of fossil fuels and do not have any emissions such as CO
₂
which is the main causes of greenhouse emissions. This paper provides the modeling and simulation of the variable speed wind turbines to investigate the performance evaluation of the system. The simulation was done by using MATLAB software and the results show that the wind speed and the turbine blades area are plays an important role in increasing the power output of the turbine. Also, the results show that the coefficient of efficiency of energy conversion plays an essential role to control the power output. This model is suitable for remote areas applications to increase the power generated by this type of free and clean energy as well as helpful in minimizing the operation cost.
