Reasoning in the Presence of NULLs

NULL values offer an explicit way to model missing, unknown or invalid values in a database. While having such an explicitly value is convenient, the resulting semantic is unfortunately often surprising. Furthermore, there seem to be cases where the desired semantic is unclear, and different systems produce different results. This paper highlights some of the problematic cases and argues for a literal interpretation of the SQL UNKNOWN.
