Neighboring Effects on the Deactivated Inverter in a Segmented Dynamic Wireless EV Charging System

In practical dynamic wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging (DWEVC) applications, the wireless charging roadway is often split into short individually controllable segments; only those segments which there are EVs running above are activated. The activated segments often impact on their adjacent deactivated segments due to the inter-coupling between neighboring segments. In particular, the neighboring effects on the inverter of a deactivated segment are studied in this paper. Characteristics of the deactivated segmental inverter under neighboring effects are studied and estimation of its DC-link voltage is derived. Moreover, the often overlooked self-inductance variation of the transmit coils with respect to the position of the receive coil or EV is investigated. Further, a 2.4-kW dynamic wireless EV charging prototype was established and tested; testing results validated the proposed DC-link voltage evaluation method and demonstrated the non-negligible influence of the self-inductance variation. Finally, segmental transition with zero DC-link voltage pulsation has been achieved on our prototype by using the proposed voltage estimation method.
