Torque Ripple Reduction Using Asymmetric Flux Barriers in Synchronous Reluctance Motor

A synchronous reluctance motor is an inexpensive variable-speed motor that is receiving increased attention as a rare-earth-free motor. However, this motor has the problem of having a high torque ripple, which causes unwanted noise and vibration. The focus of this study was to minimize the torque ripple of a synchronous reluctance motor by using an asymmetric flux barrier structure in the rotor. The effects of various flux barrier configurations on torque performance were examined, and two different flux barrier structures were combined by lamination in an asymmetric rotor structure in order to reduce the torque ripple.
