Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm Based Passive Filter Design for Variable Frequency Drives

Recent times have witnessed wider usage of variable frequency drives for different energy management applications. However, the efficiency and reliable operation of such drives is severely limited by the harmonics intrusion and poor power factor. This paper proposes a novel multi-objective optimization based passive filter design approach for mitigation of harmonics injected by variable frequency drives. The filter design task aims at meeting the twin objectives of reduced harmonic distortion and improved true power factor. The filter parameters obtained post convergence of the proposed approach improves the system performance and makes it ideal for real time implementation conforming to IEEE1531 standards.
