A Perspective of Knowledge Management in Defense Scientific Information Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), India

The lexicon of Knowledge Management (KM) came into existence in the early 1990s, when journals like Sloan Management Review, Organizational Science, Harvard Business Review started articles on the topics of knowledge acquisition, knowledge generation, and likewise few books were published on organizational learning and knowledge management. Knowledge gradually became key resource for any organization and knowledge management became the deciding factor in an organization's success. Every organization devised a structured knowledge management system consisting of multidisciplinary encompassment for an effective use of knowledge resources to achieve organisational objectives. The evolution of computer technology, artificial intelligence, expert systems, and in present day, the concept of big data and data analytics, have all aided in the acquisition of knowledge in a variety of ways. This paper illustrates how knowledge management was implemented in DESIDOC. The multitude of services were customized using open access software (DSpace) and seamlessly integrated on a single platform. The study focuses the role of DESIDOC in identifying and acquiring information and transforming into knowledge before disseminating to DRDO's scientific community. Special attention has been given to three of these services namely: DRDO Monographs, DRDO Knowledge Repository and E-Learning Portal.
