Optimization Analysis of VANET's Control Plane for Safety Application Traffic

Integration of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology in Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) brings flexibility, scalability, and management facility to Vehicle Networks. But when the connection between vehicle nodes and the main controller is lost, the safety massages must be still sent with high priority. The usage of traditional routing protocols may optimize the forwarding of the unicast traffic, but for the traffic generated by safety applications, the routing protocol may introduce unnecessarily overhead. In this paper, we study the Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) of the broadcasted Basic Safety Messages in two scenarios with different vehicle density. In both scenarios, the PDR and physical layer overhead will be measured when a routing protocol is used and when there is no routing control in place. The scenarios built in this paper will serve as a base reference for future performance comparisons between SDN-routing and traditional routing VANETs.
