Comparative analysis of boost and buck-boost converter in photovoltaic power system under varying irradiance using MPPT

Day by day the energy demand is increasing and the non-renewable energy is facing problem for fulfilling the existing demand. So the renewable sources such as solar energy have become popular and the best alternative electric source. The solar electric power requires a DC-DC converter for regulation and control of variable solar electric energy. The problems associated with DC-DC converter are a high amount of ripple, harmonics, inverts in voltage, overheating as a result of which the effective efficiency is minimized. So a single-ended boost or buck-boost converter has been used to overcome this problem. This paper presents modeling and simulation of a stand-alone solar PV system in order to analyze the performance of boost and buck-boost converter under varying irradiation with a constant load. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm has been used to track the maximum power point and to control the DC-DC converter a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) has been used. In order to convert the produced DC output to AC, an inverter has been used along with a LC filter to reduce the harmonics. The simulated results presented in this paper are developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment and validate the full PV system components.
