Comparison on Luo and Ultra Luo Converter for Power Factor Correction in BLDC Motor Drive

Motors are essential components that drives almost every systems in motion around us. Among the several classification of motors depending on the construction and with the type of electrical input power, the benefits of BLDC in low and medium power applications when compared with other motors are much appreciable while considering the advantages like high efficiency, high flux density per unit volume, low electromagnetic interference, silent operation and low maintenance requirements. Instead of using conventional brush type commutation as in induction motor a Permanent Magnet BLDC motors uses a three-phase voltage-source inverter with switching control. A Power Factor Correction circuit is utilized to improve the power quality constraint namely power factor. Bridgeless-Luo converter and Bridgeless Ultra Luo converter are two good power factor correction solutions which can be used for this application. We analysed the the performance of these two converters as a pre-regulator for BLDC motor drive system. Matlab simulink model are utilized for the analysis.
