Improvement of power delivery efficiency of distribution systems through loss reduction

The I/sup 2/R loss can be decomposed into two components based on the active and reactive parts of current. This paper first minimizes the loss associated with the active part of branch currents in a distribution system by reconfiguring the network. The loss associated with the reactive part of branch currents is then minimizes by placing optimal capacitors to the reconfigured network. The method is very simple to apply and requires only the load flow solutions of the network. The proposed method of loss reduction, and hence the improvement of power delivery efficiency, was tested on a 12.65 kV, 32-bus distribution system. The results of the system for various load levels were also presented.
