Assessment of Direct Current Links Introduction in the Transmission System

European Union's Third Energy Package, as well as Clean Energy Package for all Europeans, are setting the regulatory framework for energy market in horizon 2020 and further. One of the main objectives, for these two packages, is creation of the Internal Energy Market (IEM). It will allow European energy sector to be internally competitive and more profitable for all Europeans by enabling lower level of prices. Development of Europe-wide energy market needs an appropriate transmission infrastructure, which should represent efficiency, reliability and maximal possible level of controllability. Moreover, the energy sector faces a lot of changes. Some of those changes appear in transmission network and examples of them are hybrid grids, where HVDC supports traditional AC grid. This paper presents models of market and exemplary network in order to evaluate benefits from implementation of new DC links. Evaluation of the model is based on three scenarios, where the positive impact of new interconnectors on the market was made.
