Voice Based Eye Vision Tester for Underprivileged Community

Eye vision testing has become a common healthcare issue in this modern era. However, such checkup from an expert can be time consuming and tedious for people especially in the developing countries with scarce healthcare facilities. So a software based eye-vision testing system is presented here which is inexpensive and mobile. It can be used as an initial screening tool for those with eyesight problems. A speech recognition based program is proposed here, where a predetermined distance between the display and the user's eye is initialized. Then letters are displayed sequentially in a random order and descending size until a mismatch occurs between the utterance of the user and actual letter displayed. At this stage, the size of the letter is taken as eye limit and a pre-trained mathematical model is used to provide the eye lens power as output for adjustment. Experimental results show satisfactory accuracy. Such a solution could have significant impact to the lives of people from various underprivileged communities with by providing them a useful and easy means of regular preliminary screening of their eyesight.
