Power Loss Minimization in Power Distribution Systems Using Wind and Solar Complementarity

This paper presents an optimization framework that uses the temporal complementarity of renewable energy resources (RERs) at a given location to minimize the active power losses of distribution systems. The problem is solved using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and the validity of proposed methodology is tested using a case study based on IEEE 33-bus system. The results show that for a complementarity value of -0.66, power losses are reduced by 12.3% in contrast to stand alone wind distributed generators and by 61.1% if only photovoltaic (PV) generators are used.
