A Humanist Engineer by Design

The planetary citizens of the 21st century are presented with a world of unprecedented challenges, opportunities, and complexities, where advances in technology are fundamentally transforming our economy, society, and environment. As 21st century engineers, we are called to grow beyond our technical silos and old identities, to embrace new ways of learning, working, relating, and being, and to become innovators, collaborators, systems thinkers, and multidimensional leaders contributing positively to society. This paper describes a new concept of a Humanist Engineer created by the new technical university in the United Kingdom (current code name of the university is `New Model in Technology & Engineering'). This new initiative has created a Liberal Engineering program focused on learning-by-creating. It focuses on unique approach, which transforms the student experience, revolutionizes the classroom environment, develops a multidisciplinary curriculum, and integrates learning with industry and the global community. The proposed Liberal Engineering is an aspiration, an attitude, and a way of being. It is a vision that is co-imagined and co-created.
