Development of a Masters Level Unit of Study in Safety Systems and Risk Analysis

This paper describes and discusses the ongoing development and evolution of a masters level unit of study over the past six years, and the impact of a large increase in the number and diversity of students. The course syllabus, learning outcomes, student attributes, assessment, learning activities and teaching methodologies developed during the evolution of the course are discussed; and how these techniques have been modified to meet the needs of a large student cohort, from a diverse range of professional and cultural backgrounds. Strengths and weaknesses of the course are examined and plans for future improvements such as the incorporation of immersive learning technologies and elements of flipped learning, and their potential impact are presented.
