Mathematical Thinking Styles among Engineering Students through Algebraic Problems

Mathematical Thinking Styles (MTS) are mathematical abilities to present and understand the mathematical facts. This studies describes an investigation into university students in MTS through the algebraic problem for and relates other aspects. It is concerned with identifying differences between students who are successful with calculation and those who are not. Quantitative research method with questionnaire survey was used in this study and 248 respondents was selected from engineering students in Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics in SPSS 21.0. Analytical thinking styles showed the highest mean compared to visual and integrated thinking styles. This study also found that there is no difference between gender in the application of analytical thinking styles. Findings also implied that there is no difference between three engineering courses of analytical thinking styles. These findings can be a basis for lecturers to plan their teaching and learning strategies corresponding to student's thinking styles.
