Nonlinear Mixed Effect Model-Based Prognostics for Lithium-ion Battery Charge Decay

The role of lithium ion battery in shaping the energy utilization of portable devices has made it imperative that the remaining useful life (RUL) of the battery be well predictable with a high degree of precision, to enhance efficient utilization and forestall failure related hazards. Maintaining the state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) of these lithium ion batteries is therefore very important for risk free and efficient industrial operations. This research is aimed at using multilevel nonlinear mixed effect modeling (NLMEM) to study the charge capacity decay of lithium ion batteries and predict the End of Life (EOL) cycles. NLMEM is very vital for this study because inherent uncertainties associated with manufacturing, measurement, modeling and the operating environment are bound to have a cumulative effect on the charge capacity decay over time.
