Underwater Electricity Transmission using Electric Cables Suspended within Carbon Steel Pipes

This work studies submarine transmission of power without using the traditional XLPE technology. It utilizes the vast advantages of overhead transmission lines over XLPE based cables by suspending bare high voltage cables within submarine pipes at the star point of insulators which are spaced to minimize sag. The technology of submarine pipes has been well established by the oil and gas industry so this work furthers that development by utilizing them for electric transmission. The design of the submarine pipe suspending HVDC transmission lines was made. Clearance distance between bare transmission line and the pipe was determined. Eddy current plus joule heating levels was studied by measuring the heat levels on the pipe versus various changes in parameters like current, voltages, AC and DC. The conclusion of this work is that only current effects eddy current losses and not voltage. Also, DC is the optimal mode of transmission. The actual built up of this system is a further work.
