Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning in Documentation of Antique Vehicles

The laser scanning is a technology that in recent years is expanding on the markets. The scope of scanners use is now beyond land surveying. Data delivered by this kind of devices are used successfully in documenting antiques and creating virtual reality. The main goal of this project was to create 3D model and realistic visualization of FSO Syrena 101 car basing on data acquired by terrestrial laser scanning. Point cloud used in the project was registered by Leica P40 scanner in Museum of Municipal Engineering in Krakow. The measurement was made on the basis of 5 instrument positions and 5 spheres evenly spaced around the car. These spheres have a high albedo coefficient, which allows to identify them very easily in the point cloud, with the horizontal and vertical resolution of 2 mm for a distance of 2 m. Maximum merging error of point clouds was 0.002 m.
