Magnifying Motion Display to Improve Human Skills

People have a dream to improve own skills without struggling. In our previous work, a predictive motion display (PMD) was proposed for the teleoperation of a free-flying robot in space. The PMD shows the predicted position of a robot under the assumption that the robot maintains its current velocity. It contributes to decrease both task completion time and frequency of collision for acceleration based teleoperation. In this way, a proper operator support system can improve the operator's skills. In this paper, we propose another operator support system “magnifying motion display (MMD,” which shows the magnified motion of an inverted pendulum to stabilize an inverted pendulum task. The feasibility of the MMD is confirmed through experiments using a physical simulator with a haptic interface. The MMD contributes in stabilizing an unstable dynamic task not only for a beginner, but also for an expert.
