Low Loss & Low Cost Converter System for Wind Power Induction Generator with PAM Control

This paper proposes the Modified Trapezoidal Modulation (MTM) as a new modulation technique for a voltage source converter (VSC) for the wind power generator with HVDC transmission. The experimental results show that the MTM is more effective than the conventional sinusoidal modulation (SM) for the reduction of the VSC cost and the switching loss. The simulation feasibility study has shown that the generated ac voltage at the IG terminal has smaller peak value than theoretically expected and the real power flow into the PFCC becomes smaller enough to realize the zero real power with the VSC. This fact leads to the minimization of the VSC rating and the cost of the converter system can be reduced.
