Control-Oriented Modeling of Combustion Phasing on Diesel Engines

Diesel engines can operate with high efficiencies, but this efficient operation is contingent on proper combustion phasing control. As engine complexity increases, model-based control of combustion phasing is becoming more essential. Such a control method requires an efficient model that can predict combustion metrics based on factors such as engine speed, injection timings and fuel equivalence ratio. A mean-value control-oriented model of diesel engine combustion phasing is presented in this paper. This model combines a knock integral model, burn duration prediction model and a Wiebe function to estimate the combustion phasing of a diesel engine. The model is validated with over 500 simulations as well as experimental results and is shown to accurately predict the control phasing of diesel engine.
