Bi-directional brain interfacing instrumentation

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an effective method for treating a variety of disorders. It may be possible to improve the therapy by providing a dynamic therapy that changes based on the needs of the patient. However, these dynamic closed-loop methods require implanted devices to effectively sense biomarkers of patient state while therapy is being delivered. In this paper we review improvements made in neural sensing during stimulation for a new implantable research tool, the Summit RC+S Investigational System. We then demonstrate the effectiveness of the Summit RC+S sensing components in both saline and an ovine model in both static and dynamic stimulation settings. The results of these tests demonstrate the ability of the Summit System to effectively sense neural signals for closed-loop DBS research purposes.
