A Novel Combination of Algorithms for Accelerated Convergence to Steady-State

Due to a high production quantity and ongoing miniaturization of switched mode power supplies for consumer products, a high power density is desirable. In order to achieve this goal, a high switching frequency with low losses is necessary at the same time. With these requirements, the cost aspect must not be ignored under any circumstances. Therefore, parameter variations of the components building the power supply must be carried out for many operating points of each parameter set to take the full load as well as the part load efficiency into consideration. This requires a very fast simulation model as on the one hand transients decay very slowly within switching converters and on the other hand to cope with the vast parameter range occurring during optimization. Therefore, this paper presents a novel combination of algorithms yielding the steady-state solution of switch mode power supplies through simulation. A mixture of numerical and analytical methods to reach the steady-state operation is used within this work. The proposed simulation procedure is applied to a conventional DC-DC converter to prove its reliability and performance.
