Triangle SIW planar slot antenna with improved gain

In this paper, a novel, low-profile cavity backed 2×1-slot antenna utilizing the substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is proposed. The antenna includes a thin equilateral triangle substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity with a single radiating slot at upper edge. In the feeding layer, a SIW operating in the fundamental mode TE110 is accommodated. The performance is numerically evaluated by means of the method of finite elements. Measurement results indicate that using 2×1-slot backed by a triangle SIW cavity, it can improve antenna gain by 1.8dB over the gain of the single-slot antenna at the cost of a slight increase of the dimensions, which shows that this antenna retains good radiation performance of conventional cavity backed antennas.
