Performance analysis of wireless sensor network topologies for Zigbee using riverbed modeler

The Wireless Sensor Networks are the distributed and self-configured network structures which consists of large number of sensor nodes. The Wireless Sensor Networks are mostly applicable in industrial areas, transportation, and medical field and in data gathering for agricultural fields and security. The wireless sensor networks are provided with the small sensor nodes with minimum computational power. The Zigbee is mainly based on the IEEE802.15.4 standard in the wireless sensor networks. This paper presents the simulation analysis of the Zigbee standard using the REVERBED Academic Edition17.5 Simulator which is more proficient in giving a detailed analysis of the results. In this paper, analysis is carried out for the star, tree and mesh topologies for the increased number of nodes. Simulation is carried with 3, 5,10,15,20,25,30,35 and 40 nodes for which their network performance is observed for the parameter metrics such as End-To-End Delay(ETD), Throughput and Number of hops. The ETD for 40 node network is of 0.98 seconds for star topology and for tree and mesh topologies has least ETD of 0.01 seconds. The throughput for 40 node network is 75000bits/sec for the mesh topology which is very high compared to star and tree topologies. From the analysis it is concluded that the mesh topology provides the better performance for the parameters ETD and throughput and tree topology best suited for the parameter number of hops for the increased number of nodes.
