A control and protection system in a loop testing technology for a flexible power electronics substation

This paper proposes a method of establishing a control and protection system testing platform for a Flexible power electronics substation based on Real Time Digital simulator (RTDS) controller hardware in the loop (HIL) testing technology. Such method can be a solution of simulating the complicated operating conditions of a Flexible power electronics substation with ports for different voltage levels while resolving the difficulty of fully simulating the working conditions of a Flexible power electronics substation meanwhile improving the low efficiency of field tests. The platform has the advantages of repeatable simulation results, easy adjustment of parameters, easy simulation of working conditions and high testing efficiency. It has been proved that the control function of the control and protection system of the Flexible power electronics substation is complete, and the operation logic is correct in all kinds of abnormal operating conditions of the AC system.
