Adaptive design and optimization of a shape-changing drone

This paper explores an adaptive design and optimization strategy for a shape-shifting UAV platform, combining layout, mechanical and structural design optimization in a single workflow, allowing for the rapid evolution of platform characteristics in response to changing system components, payload characteristics and encountered field conditions. The UAV can shape-shift from a compact, ground launch or air deployable projectile into a multi-rotor drone, allowing it to be rapidly injected into the targeted environment. By creating a work-flow, which allows for the optimization of each aspect of the UAV's design in combination with 3D printing of the entire airframe, the goal is to create task specific remote sensing platforms.
