A wearable rehabilitation game controller using IMU sensor

With the rapid development of medical technology, the research topics in recent years are focusing on how to help patients rehabilitate with the interactive games. Many diseases require upper limb rehabilitation, such as frozen shoulder, or abnormal upper limb movements caused by cerebrovascular disease. These diseases often cause weakness or abnormality in the upper extremities, and sequelae such as uncontrollable limb movements. In addition to using medication, exercise therapy is a commonly used treatment. Physician designs different exercise prescriptions based on the recovery stage. Patients can get a good recovery effect by continuous practice the specific actions. However, Traditional sports treatment is time-consuming and cumbersome. Patients must go to the hospital regularly for treatment. Treatment is usually tedious because the processes repeat the same actions many times. Patients eventually lack perseverance to go to the hospital. Combined with rehabilitation actions and game content, home exercise therapy has gradually become a viable treatment method. Patients do not need to return to the hospital for treatment, but can exercise at home and assess immediately. The paper proposed a system which has ability to recognize patients' movements, assess their recovery stages and recommend appropriate exercise prescriptions based on their conditions. The paper proposed a wearable controller used to recognize upper limbs' movements. It can record the patient's historical information, and provide various levels of difficulty of the game to different recovery stages.
