An IoT-based frontal collision avoidance system for railways

Railways are the best way of transport because of its efficiency; it takes people and goods in a bigger quantity simultaneously. Even though it is the best way of transportation frequent accidents affect its overall performance and it is happening due to drivers' carelessness, track problems, and the improper signaling. In this work, a frontal collision has been considered and a new approach called IoT based collision avoidance system (IoT-CAS) is introduced for identifying the trains on the same track. A vibration sensor is placed at the end of each branch for identifying the arrival and departure of the train in the particular branch. The IoT-CAS automatically updates the status of the track in the cloud. If an arrival signal is received from both the endpoints a caution message is sent to both the driver with audio and visual effect. Accordingly, IoT-CAS manages the situation and also identifies the train which is on the same track. An experimental setup has been developed and the results show that the IoT-CAS can be utilized for rail collision avoidance.
