Design of IoT based smart shop floor-an exploratory case study

In order to prove the value and effectiveness of Internet of things (IoT) in manufacturing companies, a successful implementation IoT has been done in one of the manufacturing assembly workstation. The results of the practical study presented in the paper provide an insight into different ways of creating value in assembly workstation. The assembly workstation is provided with barcode hardware systems to realize real-time data collection. On the basis of data captured during the real time, the software system can able to monitor the assembly processes transparently. For analyzing and adding scope to the real time captured data, a number of modules are designed to increase the effectiveness of production. These modules include real-time check and availability of various objects in the shop floor, IoT based smart stations, live status of the production line and key performance analysis, and real-time statistics driven manufacturing production scheduling system. The designed modules are reviewed subject to the case scenario, and their value and effectiveness is examined as well.
