Electrostatic discharge protected user interface

Mobile electronics equipment's are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD can couple via current and fields into the internal cabling and printed circuit board traces and also directly into the integrated circuits. It can induce soft errors, such as unwanted reset, lock up, loss of information, disturbed displays, etc. It can also cause hard errors, such as permanent damage of one particular pin of integrated circuits (IC). This can lead to serious problem in the life saving medical products. For the medical equipment's, loss of data is never allowed when testing a product. Keyboard and Graphical Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is used as a User Interface (UI) for the medical X-ray System. As per medical certification standard (IEC60601-1), ESD is one of the critical tests among the nine test of EMI-EMC. It's always better to eliminate the static buildup at the source. With the proper grounding, shielding, PCB layout and Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes; ESD robustness of the system is improved and the system is passed under `A' Grade as per ESD standard IEC61000-2-4.
