The emergence of rare-earth permanent magnets is facilitating the realisation of linear motors with high speed and specific force capabilities. These are competing against traditional methods for generating controlled linear motion. Of the alterative linear motor topologies, tubular formals offer notable advantages, in term of constructional simplicity and energy efficiency., Fig.1 shows a schematic of one format of tubular PM motor, which has been developed by the authors [l].
