Changes of electroencephalographic activities in electronic cigarrate smokers' brain

This study examined the electroencephalographic changes after smoking with electronic cigarette. The experiment was done with nine participants, aged between 24–37 years old. All participants were personally reported in good health, no congenital illness, no record of brain surgery, not taking medicines or drugs that affect to nervous system. All participants were personally reported that they regularly smoke with the electronic cigarette. Several exclusion criteria were controlled including (a) left handedness, (b) history of medical and neurologic diseases, (c) psychiatric disorders, (d) head trauma, (e) assumption of central nervous system active drugs in the two weeks prior to study entry, and (f) presence of electroencephalographic abnormalities at the baseline recording, respectively. The present study demonstrated that electroencephalographic activities could be recorded after smoking electronic cigarette. The amplitude of electroencephalographic activities showed that alpha, beta and gamma frequency bands gradually increased with statistically significant after smoking the electronic cigarette. Therefore, the smoking with electronic cigarette significantly altered the electroencephalographic changes. However, future studies are needed to examine how these electroencephalographic changes are associated with those electroencephalographic changes in the human brain cognition and perception.
