Introduction of Sparkline as Snippet to Context Search Engine Result Page

This paper proposes to introduce a sparkline to the result page of context search engine (CSE). The CSE is a kind of search engines designed for answering trend-related queries. As trend information, which is represented as temporal data, is common in many applications including communitycentric systems, the CSE is expected to be available regardless of domains. Result pages of existing search engines usually have a snippet, which is useful as a clue to judge whether or not to visit result pages. By introducing a snippet into CSE result pages (CSERP), search efficiency is expected to be improved. As the target data of CSE is temporal data, this paper employs a sparkline as a snippet. Experiments are conducted to examine the effect of a sparkline on users search behaviors using the CSE. The result shows the effectiveness of a sparkline as a snippet.
