A novel method to improve energy efficiency through SMART unit by unit economic dispatching

Millions of US$ were saved through implementing a plan to enhance scheduling and despatch process within ADWEA network. This paper briefly describe the main tasks carried out and successfully implemented to achieve this massive savings to power sector in ADWEA system in term of fuel saving. Realizing the multi-dimensional challenges of (S&D) process such as enormous growth in demand, inclusion of newer technologies in power production, addition of renewable/nuclear power plants and need to optimize the entire process of Scheduling and Despatching, Transco, the system operator of ADWEA network embarked on a journey of enhancement as a project. Based on recommendations prepared after some comprehensive studies. AGC tuning, development of EDL (Electronic Data Logger), migration of Unit Commitment algorithm from Lagrange relaxation to MILP (Mixed Integer Linear programming), introduction of back casting that provided an auditing view of the optimum and actual schedules and identified cost of practical and network related constraints, are some of the major advancements achieved during this project. While Unit wise despatching brought a new era of cost saving in despatching process. These enhancements resulted not only in improvement of (S&D) process but also on economic front that brought vast revenue saving to the sector.
