The effectiveness of peripheral interaction concept for mobile phone usage while driving

We can perform several daily tasks in parallel easily, e.g. listening music while driving. But there are some tasks that dangerous when performed simultaneously because both activities require a lot of attention, e.g. using mobile phone while driving. But sometimes we meet that situation and it can not be avoided (i.e pickup an urgent incoming call), then we still use mobile phone even while driving. This study tried to resolve those problem by implemented peripheral interaction concept for mobile phone user interface. Peripheral interaction is an activity where human interact with an object using periphery of attention. The purpose of implementing peripheral interaction for application user interface is to reduce the amount of attention, therefore the user can finish their main activity without being distracted. Our results show that the completion rate for the driving condition was 97.78% (88 of 90) and 100% for not driving condition. The average of time response while driving was 1.26 seconds and the average of time difference between driving and not-driving condition was 0.68 seconds. Although from qualitative data there are some negative comments, but quantitative data indicated that the application was still easy to use.
